Restaurant Review
Mexicue Stamford, CT USA
Gluten Free Connecticut|Tacos
Hey Foodie Fam! Have you ever seen Mexicue on IG?
If you love tacos as much as I do then you would be as eager as I was to get
there after laying your eyes on the visual feast that is their Instagram feed.
Lucky for me, they have a location only half an hour from where I am staying in
Connecticut, and my friend Daniela , who is always down to eat, works in the area.
When you walk into Mexicue, it has
a hotel lobby vibe, which I loved because I felt like I had arrived at the much
needed vacation spot which I am long overdue for. The restaurant is trendy and classy
with simple, clean, yet creative décor (I'll get photos next visit and post it on the gram). To top it off, it seems like a great spot for after
work drinks, dining & socializing, which Daniela and I will be checking out
in the future.
As the name of the restaurant suggests, the food at Mexicue is a marriage between Mexican and BBQ flavors. Before I get into the gluten free
aspect of this review, which is the main purpose of my food blogging endeavors,
I will say that for those of you who are NOT gluten free, there are a ton of
delicious looking options! I definitely snuck a peak at the plates of those
dining around me and the food looked BOMB delicious! Get your
derriere over there!
That said, my food and restaurant
exploration is about the gluten free available options since this is my area of
food interest and needs. TACOS are my target for this particular venue. I am
quite the taco connoisseur. I LOVE me some great tacos! *I’m always in it
for the tacos* Therefore, in regards to the tacos, options were slim. SUPER
slim for me. If you are gluten free, and don’t eat seafood as I don’t, the
smoky chicken taco will be your ONLY taco option. At least according to the
sweet guy that was serving us, and I must admit that he didn’t really seem to
know much about the gluten free details of the menu. Initially he had told me
that the fried avocado taco was gluten free, and kudos to him, he doubled
checked anyway with the kitchen to confirm the safety of my order and returned
to inform me that they were in fact NOT gluten free. So, how was that smoky
chicken taco you ask? AMAZING. If you are gluten free and like seafood, you
will have a few more options to choose from than I did if you’re in it solely for
the taco glory. If you’re there for more than tacos, you can expect more gluten
free options for sure!
Aside from tacos, Mexicue also has options
that are safe for those who are gluten free and, of course, salads (though I
personally rarely dine out for a salad unless I have a completely uncommon craving, it's generally just Zzzzz for me). Here is the menu from my visit, which
may be changed for the current season.
So the bottom line is
1.
Will I be going there again? YES! That one taco
and the venue itself is well worth it. Plus, foodie gossip, my friend Bobby
said he heard the drinks there are PHENOMENAL. I’m not much of a drinker, but
when your friend HEARS from THEIR friend who heard from their coworker who
heard from their mailman that the drinks are phenomenal, ya gotta give it a
shot or two ;)
2.
Does it have a variety of gluten free options? Taco
wise, not really, but my future visits there will be more for socializing, so
their chicken taco will be all that I need. For those who are not under a taco
obsession spell, or eat seafood, there are a lot more gluten free options than
there were for me! The quality of the food there was great and I would imagine
their non-taco gluten free plates would be delicious. If you have any GF
recommendations from Mexicue, please let us know in the comments below!
3.
Is the venue gluten free safe/friendly? They
want to be and they care to be, but at the end of the day this is not a gluten
free facility and it is your responsibility to make sure your server and chef
are aware of your dietary restrictions. I got lucky that my server fact checked
himself with the chef. Your server may not do the same, so I absolutely suggest
you ask your server to make a clear note of this for the chef. This venue is
absolutely accommodating, they looked out for me, so I have no reason to
believe that they wouldn’t for the next gluten free customer.
